Joddy Eric Matthews, the Writer/Director of the upcoming urban sci-fi anthology streaming series, The Baobab Tree, is a Clio Award Winning Director, Cinematographer, Editor and VFX Artist with a wide range of credits, including directing spots for Altria, General Electric, Dow Chemical, USVision, JC Penney Optical, Phillip Morris, Vodaphone, General Motors, Winslow and Sherwin Williams. Recently, he produced and edited the Network Television show,
CaribbeanGirlNYC. The dramatic comedy, produced by Overeasy/Gwada of Guadeloupe and CaribbeanTales of Canada, premiered on FranceTV and FLOWTV, and directed the streaming episodic, Daughters of Legend, starring Kimberly Brown (Daughter of NFL Legend Jim Brown), and Robin Charles (Daughter of the Legendary Ray Charles). His current creative effort finds him serving as an American Cinematographer on the Israeli-produced Netflix Doc, The Devil Next Door about the life of the convicted Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk.

On the directing side, Joddy has recently helmed the Fox/Bally Sports Documentary King of The Block, Hulu feature #50Fathers (Best Feature, GCUFF, TIFF), along with CCBFF 2015 Best webisode and upcoming AppleTV Plus Realtime Virtual Production Series Nina Blue: Seeing Tomorrow and well-received documentaries including Capoeira: Live The Game (2018 Latin Festival Winner), have screened at thirty-seven film festivals in twelve countries. 2020 and 2018 also saw Joddy snag Best Documentary wins for three films, Soul Food, Capoeira: PLAY, and Sankofa: Solving X (The Cannes affiliated Capital City Black Film Festival and The Urban Film Festival) along with a PBS airing for the doc One Team.

    Journey into The Belly of The Beast

    Fresh from film school and his first independently made 16mm feature film, Matthews ventures into the world of Computer Generated Animation after watching Jurassic Park. His passion and intense focus drive him to learn the IRIX OS based Softimage 3d, the software behind the film's legendary computer generated dinosaurs.

    A Phantom Menace

    Joddy broke ground in the early 90’s by being one of only a handful of African Americans to enter and work in the visual effects business. Later in the decade, he joined Alias as a part of the visual effects technical crew that researched fluid and particle dynamics for the company’s groundbreaking new animation software, Maya.

    Returning to his home town of Cleveland for family, Joddy founded MadWerkz Studios. Leveraging his work as a Creative Director, Director, Animator and Post Production professional, MadWerkz has turned into one of the largest minority creative boutique of its kind.

    The City Agenda

    In 2004 and 2005, Joddy directed the local Emmy award-winning video, The City Agenda, featuring R&B Singer Usher for The YMCA along with Get out the Vote commercials with 21st District Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge and Sean Combs.

    A Decade of Humble Hustle I Directing

    The next decade saw Joddy helm several films including the award winning docudrama The Bubble, and the dramatic short ReversALL. He also directed and wrote the award winning Sci-Fi webisode, Nina Blue: Seeing Tomorrow which is being turned into a episodic series for AppleTV.

    Joddy teamed up with Director Branson Wright (Believeland) to edit the documentary, Pass Interference: The Davone Bess Story. A gripping story of an NFL player's battle with the effects of living as a bipolar athlete.
