I Will Never Forget! The 10-Year Anniversary of 137 Shots

It’s the 10th year anniversary of the infamous 137 Shots that killed two unarmed residents of Cleveland.

Part of the Be Doc Mixtape Vol.1: An Activist Romance Story

Timothy Russell, 43-year old at the time, and 30-year-old Malissa Williams never stood a chance that cold, nightmarish, deadly night of November 29th,  2012 as I stood in the very same parking lot where they were gunned down by 13 officers who fired 137 shots into a car, killing both – Timothy and Malissa.

As we called it, “137 Shots” the crowd shouted loudly 1, 2, 3 to 137 (shouting RELOAD) after every 10th sound off. I could vividly see the car with both bodies inside, lifeless, not trying to escape and not drive away.

I stood there at the memorial rally along with my fellow Community Activists and other local leaders, in the parking lot of W. H. Kirk Middle School in East Cleveland (formally known as Heritage Middle School).

I couldn’t help but think if that happened during a school day, those poor children would’ve been traumatized by what they saw. Something no child nor human should ever witness.  As we called it, “137 Shots” the crowd shouted loudly 1, 2, 3 to 137 (shouting RELOAD) after every 10th sound off. I could vividly see the car with both bodies inside, lifeless, not trying to escape and not drive away. They were already dead and still more bullets were pumped into their bodies; at that point, it was like desecration of a human corpse.

Why do we activists do what we do? Because we have to keep police reform and excessive force issues before the public, especially during the time of national outcry. We Will Never Forget it! nor Will We Let Them Forget! What they’ve done to two unarmed civilians after a backfire of their vehicle which led to a manhunt car chase, which was due to their fear of police stops, and was led through the City of Cleveland and other suburbs-neighboring East Cleveland which ended in them being gunned down Bonnie and Clyde style.

The rallies are needed to remember the “137 Shots” atrocity and to continue our push against excessive force killings by the Cleveland Police which no Officer was held accountable for their actions. “OPEN SEASON on BLACK FOLKS”.
